2026 All-Star High School Jazz Band

This honors ensemble represents the strongest young jazz musicians in southeast Michigan high schools, and is based on standard Big Band instrumentation. It’s intended that one student per school will be selected. No more than two students from any one school will be allowed. Membership will be determined by audition.
 
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Students are required to attend all rehearsals and performances. This requirement is without exception. Read the schedule carefully. Please apply only if you can make a 100% commitment.
  • Students, grades 9-12, must be members in good standing in their school’s Jazz Program.
  • Students must submit a Letter of Recommendation from their school’s band director.
  • Students must comply with all application/audition requirements.
  • Students must supply all required equipment. (woodwind doubles, flugals, mutes. rhythm equip., etc.)
  • Only COMPLETE applications submitted on or before the deadline will be considered.

Director: David Jensen
David Jensen received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Central Michigan University and a Masters in Music Performance degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He is recently retired from the Royal Oak School District after a 33 year career teaching Band, Orchestra, Guitar and Music Theory at all levels.  
 
Now an Emeritus Member of the Michigan Schools Band And Orchestra Association, Mr. Jensen served at both the district and state levels in numerous positions.  Included are Chair of the Music Education Committee, Vice President for Adjudication, Vice President for Marching Band Activity, and Board of Directors for Director Development Days.  Most notably is State Vice President for Jazz Activity, where he was responsible for the creation of the Michigan All-State Jazz Band.  Mr. Jensen continues to serve MSBOA as an adjudicator, clinician, and consultant.
 
Mr. Jensen has been on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for nearly three decades as a director, and performer.  He directed the Blue Lake International Jazz Band on several European tours, and currently serves as the Coordinator of the Jazz Department.  His most recent appointment is director of the legendary Blue Lake Monster, the camp’s premier jazz ensemble.
 
As a Jazz/Pop/Classical musician, Mr. Jensen is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in trombone, trumpet, and bass.  He performs regularly in the Detroit area and throughout the state with numerous headline artists, in numerous theatrical productions, and with Detroit’s finest jazz artists.
 
Now on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Jazz Festival, his latest endeavor is the creation of the Michigan High School All-Star Jazz Band.  He’s looking forward to continuing the tradition of the honors ensemble, offering its members the highest experience in jazz performance.
