The 2021 Michigan Jazz Festival will be virtual

The Michigan Jazz Festival is seeking performers for its 2021 festival. Our seven stages will be virtual this summer — which means that we are soliciting videos of your big bands, combos, vocal duos and piano solos.

When is the Michigan Jazz Festival?

The 2021 virtual festival will appear on the Festival’s website Sunday, July 18, and will remain online for eight days. The website will contain links to the pre-recorded (that is, not livestreamed) videos.

Who may apply?

Any jazz performer or jazz group from the state of Michigan may apply.

How do I apply?

Complete the application form below. In the form you will provide a YouTube link to your completed video. Your video might be a new recording that you prepared expressly for the festival; or it could be a recording of a previous performance from the last three years. The video must be 30 to 45 minutes in length. The application deadline is May 1.

How will performers be selected?

The MJF Board of Directors will collaboratively select the videos for the seven virtual stages.
Selection criteria include:

  • production quality (video and audio)
  • performance quality
  • the festival’s overall variety and diversity
  • preference for performers who were booked for the canceled 2020 Festival

Individual musicians are limited to appearing in no more than two videos in the festival.

How will the performers be compensated?

Artist fees for the 2021 virtual festival are identical to those of our most recent on-stage festivals. Sidemen receive $90 per performance, with greater fees provided to group leaders and solo pianists. Contact us at info@michiganjazzfestival.org for more information.
